An Angel, A Wish, An Inspiration

Two years ago Maddie Babineau told the Children's Wish Foundation she'd rather build a school in Africa than have a big screen TV or a trip to Disneyland. But long before that, long before she was sick, friends in her Ottawa neighbourhood thought that Maddie just might be an angel.
In a few days, the girl known for "giving away her Wish" is supposed to become Ontario's newest Junior Citizen of the Year at a ceremony in Niagara Falls. But on this mid-March day, Maddison Babineau huddles in an Ottawa hospital room, overcome by a recent and unforgiving round of chemotherapy that will hopefully stop a very aggressive bone cancer, that has just returned for the third time.
The 15-year-old is gaunt and tired and the wallet-sized drug patch on her arm doesn't dull the pain.
Maddie, as almost everyone calls her, only arrived in Ottawa the day before. She'd returned to the city where she was born and spent much of her young life to watch her favourite hockey team. The Ottawa Senators gave her tickets. Her mother Sharon drove her from Hamilton through a snowstorm to make the game, but Maddie was almost too sick to attend. She only saw one period.
